One-Hour HD Documentary (2021)

A rare travel documentary shot during the Covid-19 pandemic, while most Americans were sheltering at home in 2020, two Americans living in China had the unique opportunity to travel to Nanjing to discover a city with a remarkable history.  After relocating to China from Massachusetts Gina Falzon became a photographer. Alden McDonald, an actress, moved from Los Angeles to China five years ago.  Both friends spent a week during the pandemic exploring the sites of Nanjing starting with a visit to Zhonghua Gate, an architectural structure known worldwide as the most complex castle-style gate in China. They also visited Zhanyuan Garden, considered to be the most authentic garden of the Ming dynasty and restored in 1960 to the beautiful site it is today.

Two significant stops along the way included a visit to the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum via the Elephant Road and a trek to the Purple Mountain to see Dr. Sun Yat-Sen’s Mausoleum. Their adventure topped off with an exploration of the Jiming Temple and Chaotian Palace, an architecture wonder.

Nanjing is well known for beautiful traditional artwork. From calligraphy to brocade, lantern making and the art of gold thread and leaf making, there was no shortage in creative inspiration on this trip.  Gina and Alden visited several artists that included a meeting with Ronghua velvet flower making Master Zhao Shuxian the only acclaimed velvet flower artist in China.  Explore Dapaidang a relatively new restaurant featuring over 100 dishes of delicious Chinese cuisine including Nanjing’s famous boiled salted duck.

With limited travel across the world in the midst of a global health crisis the two friends found an amazing adventure in China, a place they now call home.

One-Hour HD Documentary (2021)

A rare travel documentary shot in China during the Covid-19 pandemic. 2020 was an exceptional year as the world experienced a global health crisis. In the midst of quarantines and countries shutting down their borders two American women found their way back home to China.  Alden McDonald, an actress and Gina Falzon, a photographer, consider Shanghai their home.  The two friends traveled to Yinchuan during the pandemic with certain restrictions that gave them the freedom to move safely through the city.

Yinchuan, the capital of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, has remarkable historical sites from Helan Mountain to the Baisikou Twin Pagoda and the Great Wall Ruins.  However, within the city is a modern-day facility fast outpacing Hollywood studios. Zhenbeibu Western Film Studio is a converted castle from the Qing and Ming dynasties that has produced over 200 films.  Walk through the studio with the pair as they discuss how it differs from American movie sets.

Then visit a family from Minning Town, a development 20 plus years in the making and home to immigrants in the region.  Minning Town is China’s example of how the country developed a town in the Gobi Desert into a model for “poverty-alleviation.”

As foodies, their gastronomic adventure went from hand rolled noodle soup, to traditional handheld mutton to wine tasting at the Lansai Winery.  Perhaps compared with Napa Valley, wine making in this region of China is fast becoming a world competitor in the industry.

Another import into the country is graffiti art. Meet Ma Xiao a well-known artist in Yinchuan as he paints a picture of modern-day Chinese artwork.

For many, the global health crisis was a shock to global economies as people were restricted from travel and the norms of the past.  For Alden and Gina turning tragedy into an opportunity fueled their exploration of one of China’s unique and enterprising cities.

We are a Family

One-Hour HD Documentary (2020)

A trip to China for a bi-cultural family living in San Carlos, California brings a new awareness and appreciation for their cross-cultural ties.

In 2001, Jane arrived in America from China to pursue her professional dance career with the Chinese Cultural Dance Company in San Francisco.  Soon after she met her husband Rick, a division manager with a Tree Company in San Jose. They and their 11 year old Chinese American daughter Michelle travel to China to experience the shared values, customs, cuisine and family ties that bring them closer as a family.

The creative aspect of dance and the metaphor Rick uses to describe the structure of family is amplified through their journey as each experience brings them closer to their ties abroad.

In the end it becomes clear that their trip to China was more of a homecoming rather than just a visit to a foreign country.  Their experience was like a well rooted tree. Solid and strong. A foundation between two cultures like no other.

Two-Hour HD Documentary (2019)

Have you ever wondered how a film gets made? Or considered the creative process behind every aspect that goes into making a good documentary? 18 students from San Francisco State University’s renowned film school had the opportunity to dig down deep and produce documentaries during a life changing three-week journey to Huizhou, one of the most celebrated ancient towns in China.

For many, this was their first trip to a country where some misconceptions were quickly dismantled. From meeting local families to exploring art studios, opera houses and health centers and learning traditions like the art of tea drinking, the students were overwhelmed by their experience and the rich stories they witnessed.

With only three weeks to produce 4 short documentaries see what these next generation storytellers experienced in their journey. For many, it was not only the experience of crafting a well-told story; it was a game changer in comparing and contrasting American ideals with Chinese cultural traditions.

Travel the ancient Silk Road with Jamie an accountant and Gareth an architect both from San Francisco, California.   From Xian to Lanzhou to Jiuquan and the Gobi Desert the couple rides the rails in an adventure that takes them far from their creature comforts of life in the United States.

China’s high-speed rail takes them to destinations where they discover and learn about China’s history. A visit to Tang West Market Museum, where areas of the Silk Road are still preserved to this day gives the couple a perspective on how commodities were traded over 1,400 years ago.

Join Jamie and Gareth as they observe the fast pace of development in Lanzhou city and try their hands at making noodles under the guidance of a local noodle master.

Visits to ancient tombs, and caves, and a sheepskin raft ride down the Yellow River capped off by a camel ride in Mingsha Shan make for an exciting adventure that they could have never imagined.
